Main Characters[]
The Protagonist[]
One of the brave warriors who travels to Boletaria in order to free it from or join forces with the Old One.
- Badass
- Any of the Badass appearance tropes may apply depending on how the PC is created.
- Like A Badass out of the Nexus
- Competitive Balance: Depends on how you start off.
- Fragile Speedster: The Thief, The Wanderer.
- Glass Cannon: The Barbarian.
- Magic Knight: The Magician, The Priest.
- Jack of All Stats: The Knight, The Hunter.
- Mighty Glacier: The Temple Knight, The Soldier.
- Squishy Wizard: The Noble.
- Contractual Immortality: Has a Nexial Binding attached to them after they die in the tutorial, binding them to the Nexus. They become a Monumental should the Maiden be allowed to lull the Old One back to sleep.
- Cosmic Keystone: One of the endings for the player, taking the place of The Monumental.
- Determinator
- Heroic Mime: Aside from crying in pain, the player character doesn't really say anything.
- The Silent Bob: Although talking to NPCs seems to imply him/her talking.
- He Who Fights Monsters: In order to become more powerful and better able to fight the demons, the protagonist has to acquire and manipulate souls, an act that effectively makes him/her more demonic in nature. And one of the endings has the protagonist take Allant's place as the Old One's emissary.
- Hyperspace Arsenal: To a point. There is a max weight limit for your inventory.
- Luckily, My Shield Will Protect Me: All the classes start out with some kind of shield; they're pretty much essential to survival.
- Multi Melee Master/Multi Ranged Master/Bow and Sword In Accord/Etc: Any can apply depending on the player's choices.
- Protagonist Without a Past: Aside from being stuck in the Nexus, nothing about the protagonist's history is explained.
The Maiden in Black[]
Voiced by: Evetta Muradasilova |
The Maiden in Black is said to have once been one of the most powerful Demons in existence. Her ability to harness and manipulate the souls of the player-character certainly seems interesting. She maintains a direct communion with the Old One, and is even able to lull it back to sleep should the character accept her offer, making her considerably more powerful than it.
- Contractual Immortality: Killing her will only cause the Nexial Binding around her right ankle to resurrect her after a few seconds, and she doesn't become hostile toward you, unlike the other NPCs you can attack.
- Dark Is Not Evil: She has a pretty sinister moniker and an overall creepy vibe, and happens to be one of the most powerful demons around. However, she is the only one who can lull the Old One back to sleep, and wants nothing more than to do so.
- Eerie Pale-Skinned Brunette
- Extreme Doormat: She never fights back, and if you kill her, her reaction after getting better will be to tearfully apologize to you for not staying dead.
- Eye Scream: Her eyes are caked over in wax.
- Mysterious Waif
- Really 700 Years Old: She is the oldest Demon in existence, save the Old One.
- Troubled but Cute
- Ye Olde Butcherede Englishe
The Monumental[]
Voiced by: Aditi Tanna |
The Monumental is the last surviving harbinger of its kind. They are a vessel-race endowed only with prophetic knowledge and lacking all consequence of emotion or personal-thought. It seeks to aid the adventurer into lulling the Old One back to sleep.
- Ambiguous Gender
- Big Good: Keeps the universe in balance and is the one who leads the Player Character to the Nexus.
- But Thou Must!: When the Monumental tells you its plan to defeat the Old One, you get to decline to helping it. It then points out that your only other option is staying in the Nexus for all eternity, slowly withering away.
- Contractual Immortality: The Monumental is the only NPC that reacts to being attacked without taking damage, and it chides you for wasting your energy. If you choose to lull the Old One back to sleep, it dies off-screen and you become a Monumental in its place.
- Cosmic Keystone
- The Stoic: The Monumentals are described as lacking emotion.
- Not So Stoic: Even so, it's not above laughing at you should you refuse to help mend the world.
- Really 700 Years Old
Nexus Residents[]
People found within the lands veiled in the Colorless Fog who have found their way to the Nexus.
Stockpile Thomas[]
A former resident of the Boletaria Palace who watches over the extra belongings of Demon slayers. He's worried about his wife and daughter, who were left behind during the chaos when King Allant unleashed the Colorless Fog.
- Dead Little Daughter: If the player shows him his daughter's Jade Hairpin, he tearfully reaches the conclusion that she didn't make it after all.
- Dirty Coward: Although not so much "dirty". He admits that he ran as fast and hard as he could to escape the Fog, and never leaves the Nexus out of fear.
- Nice Guy
- Pet the Dog/Kick the Dog: You can find his daughter's Jade Hairpin in the first fourth of the Boletarian Palace. Talking to him after obtaining it gives you the choice of either giving it to him or not. Giving him the Hairpin will grant him closure and you his deep gratitude and a Ring of Herculean Strength. Not giving it to him has him shrugging off his sentimentality, but his tone shows that he really wanted the Hairpin as a final keepsake.
Blacksmith Boldwin[]
Voiced by: Mike Carter |
A former resident of the Stonefang Tunnels and twin brother to Blacksmith Ed. Both him and Ed carry a set of gauntlets named the Hands of God, which once belonged to a dragon slayer who was known as the Legendary Big M. - The Blacksmith
- Badass
- Badass Baritone
- Badass Beard
- Badass Grandpa
- Bald of Awesome: Well, more like balding...
- Good Old Fisticuffs: Says that he used to beat up bearbugs with his bare hands. The loading screen showing him and Ed shows them sparring.

- Grumpy Old Man: Although not as bad as his brother.

- Mr. Exposition
Worshipper of God[]
A follower of Saint Urbain and former resident of the Boletarian Palace. Her grandfather was a traveler and miner, as she has his old pickaxe and a Pure Faintstone he once found in the Stonefang Tunnels.

- Berserk Button: Killing Urbain will cause her to attack you.
- God Is Good: Shares this belief with Urbain.
- Tragic Keepsake: The Pure Faithstone her grandfather gave her.

Yuria the Witch[]
Voiced by: Jenny Funnel |
A witch who was born with a magical ring in her hand, she was persecuted from a young age as a threat. As she grew older, her hatred lead to a thirst for power, leading her to venturing into Boletaria. There, she was defeated and imprisoned within a tower of the Palace. Yuria is the only one other than Sage Freke to teach advanced Spells through the exchange of Demon's souls. Her Witchcraft is accomplished by using emotions to channel the raw power of a Demon's soul.
- Bad Powers, Good People: She belives her witchcraft is evil, but otherwise is a nice person.
- Broken Bird: Oh, so broken. She was defeated by Executioner Miralda and imprisoned within a tower for "special cases". Once there, she was ill-fed, tortured, and heavily implied to be raped by the Fat Officials.

Patches the Hyena[]
Voiced by: William Vanderpuye |
A graverobbing vagabond with a dislike for the clergy. He sets up shop in the Nexus should you meet him and escape from his traps.
- Affably Evil
- The Archer: Though you never find out unless you happen to spot his quiver, or provoke him in some way.
- Bald of Evil
- Berserk Button: He isn't fond of the clergy, to say the least.
- Blade on a Stick
- Blatant Lies
- Chronic Backstabbing Disorder
- Dirty Coward
- Easily Forgiven: Relatively played straight with the player. Not so much with Saint Urbain and his wards.
- Even Evil Has Standards: Patches may be a backstabbing, graverobbing bastard, but even he is wary of Yurt the Silent Chief.
- Healing Factor: Given to him by the Adjudicator's Shield he carries.
- Heel Face Turn: Becomes a merchant in the Nexus. He disappears temporarily should you enter a world you can encounter him in until you escape his second trap.
- Jerkass

- Sinister Schnoz: He has a pretty impressively-sized nose, to say the least.
- Suspiciously Specific Denial:
Nothing here is stolen, I swear. I no longer partake in the whole "corpse-robbing" thing. Yeah… No, I'm completely free from my vice. My old mother would be proud indeed! |
Sage Freke the Visionary[]
Voiced by: Mike Harbour |
A powerful user of the Soul Arts who has a long-standing rivalry with Saint Urbain. He is friends with the enchanter Geri, who has made many magical artifacts. Freke originally set upon stopping the siege on the Tower of Latria, but was defeated and imprisoned. Sage Freke teaches advanced Spells through the exchange of Demon's souls. His Magic is accomplished by studying the essence of a Demon's soul.
- Defector From Decadence: His Sage's robes look like a set of altered and travel-worn Saint's robes, indicating that he was possibly once part of the same religious organization as Saint Urbain. This can also explain why the two have such a heated rivalry.
- In the Hood
- Jumping Off the Slippery Slope: He wants the Old One to stay awakened in order to use and study the Soul Arts to his heart's content.
- Knife Nut: Carries a knife in his loading screen art, and gives you Geri's Stiletto when you free him.
- Macross Missile Massacre: The Homing Soul Arrow Spell.
- Non-Elemental: The Soul Ray spell.
- Not So Different: Sage Freke and his followers despise Saint Urbain and his followers as fools worshiping a false and most definitely malevolent god. Likewise, Urbain condemns Freke and his ilk as heretics who rely on demon magic for power. Both sides are absolutely correct!
- Plaguemaster: The Poison Cloud, Acid Cloud, and Death Cloud Spells.
- Playing with Fire: The Fire Ball and Fire Spray Spells.
- Status Buff: The Warding and Light Weapon Spells.
Saint Urbain[]
Voiced by: Jon Keeble |

- Man in White
- Not So Different: Sage Freke and his followers despise Saint Urbain and his followers as fools worshiping a false and most definitely malevolent god. Likewise, Urbain condemns Freke and his ilk as heretics who rely on demon magic for power. Both sides are absolutely correct!
Yurt the Silent Chief[]
A warrior claiming to be a Demon slayer who is trapped in the Tower of Latria. He is actually a sociopathic mercenary under the employment of the Order of Souls to slay all who know of the Soul Arts. If freed and not killed right away, he will start murdering the residents of the Nexus until you are the only one left.
- Ax Crazy
- Badass Baritone
- Cool Helmet
- The Faceless: In-game, although concept art of his face exists.
- Names to Run Away From Really Fast
- Obviously Evil: The menacing voice... the Sauron-like armor... the sinister-looking weapon... the statement that "Life is not so precious." Really, though, he's in a cage when you meet him. If he is anything, it is not good.
- Psycho for Hire: He's killing off people in the Nexus for the Order of Souls, and it's never said why. If he came to Boletaria just to off a few people, he's clearly got more than a few loose screws.
- Sinister Shotel
- Spikes of Villainy: Let's put it this way; his helmet would make a fine spear.
Mephistopheles[]
Voiced by: Hannah McBride |
A mysterious woman who appears in the Nexus should Yurt be killed and the player have Pure Black Character Tendency. Mephistopheles is a high-ranking member of the Order of Souls: a group who wish to keep the way of the Soul Arts to themselves. She wishes to employ the player to finish Yurt's job. A knight in fluted armor wielding a rune sword and shield. His real name is Prince Ariona Allant, and he is the son of King Allant XII. He seeks his father's council, but kills himself after finding out that a demonic farce sits on the throne. Before doing so, he entrusts the player with his sword, shield, and the key to the Allant family mausoleum. He then turns into a Black Phantom and serves as the last obstacle before facing the False Allant.
- Cool Sword: The Runesword. You can get a very clear shot of it in his loading screen art. And then you can get one of your own from his Black Phantom form.
- Distressed Dude
- Driven to Suicide
- Back From the Dead: Regardless of whether he commits suicide or dies earlier in the game, he comes back as a Black Phantom just before fighting the False King Allant.

- Mr. Exposition: He's quite knowledgeable about Boletaria's history, and more than willing to share it with you when he's in the Nexus.
- Nice Guy
- Prince Incognito
- Paper-Thin Disguise: It's not hard to figure out who he his, with him exclaiming "Father!" in later levels of the Boletarian Palace.
- Royals Who Actually Do Something
- Supporting Leader: He is the Prince of Boletaria and only appears in the first world, which gives him as much relevance to the plot as the Maiden in Black and The Monumental.
- Warrior Prince: Although this trope is stretched quite a bit, given how often he needs to be rescued.
Executioner Miralda[]
King Allant's personal henchwoman, Miralda became a stain upon Boletaria. She follows the word of the False Allant without fail. Miralda's execution grounds becomes available after gaining either Pure White or Pure Black World Tendency for the Boletarian Palace. "I have you now, traitor to the king." |
Biorr of the Twin Fangs[]
Voiced by: Mike Carter |
Older brother of Vallarfax, Biorr and his brother were known as the Twin Fangs amongst the Knights of the Round Table of Boletaria. Biorr is a mountain of a man, wielding a great sword in his right hand and a massive crossbow in his left hand, even wearing a full suit of Brushwood Armor. Should he survive and fight his way through the Demon hordes, he meets his end against the Blue Dragon.

- Body Horror
- Brutal Honesty: He praises God for the "golden opportunity" to steal whatever wares he can from the cursed miners.
Blacksmith Ed[]
Voiced by: Mike Carter |
A resident of the Stonefang Tunnels and twin brother to Blacksmith Boldwin. Both him and Boldwin carry a set of gauntlets named the Hands of God, which once belonged to a dragon slayer who was known as the Legendary Big M. He is covered in more scales than Boldwin. His greater single-minded focus on smithing is a result of the curse that corrupted the Burrowers into the Excavators.
- The Blacksmith
- Badass
- Badass Baritone
- Badass Beard
- Badass Grandpa
- Bald of Awesome: Well, more like balding...
- Good Old Fisticuffs: The loading screen showing him and Boldwin shows them sparring.

- Ultimate Blacksmith: Giving him the Flamelurker's Demon's Soul allows Ed to forge weapons infused with a Demon's Soul.
Scirvir the Wanderer[]
Voiced by: Jonathan Kydd |
A wanderer who seeks the treasures of the unknown. He has journeyed into the Stonefang Tunnels in hopes of finding the Dragon Bone Smasher: a massive great sword that is without an edge. He only appears once the player has a Pure White World Tendency for the Stonefang Tunnels. He appears as a Black Phantom during a PBWT.

- Body Horror: Although her dress and mask hide it.
- Broken Bird
Lord Rydell[]
The spirit of a former Lord, he is also known as "Little Allant" and is possibly related to King Allant. Due to a curse placed on him, his spirit is trapped in a cell and unable to reach his corpse. His is known for his combat staff, the Phosphorescent Pole, which he stole from a sky witch. Rydell appears as a Blue Phantom during a PWWT, allowing his side quest, or a Black Phantom during a PBWT.

- Hidden Eyes: His eyes are shadowed out in his loading screen art.

Shrine of Storms Residents[]
Graverobber Blige[]

Master Satsuki[]
A wandering swordsman seeking the magic sword Makoto, which he claims is a family heirloom, for his father. He's lying. Should the player acquire the Makoto and return to Satsuki, he will attempt to take the blade for himself and attack. He can be seen perched atop a wall in all World Tendencies, but shall come down once a Pure White World Tendency is achieved. He appears as a Black Phantom during a PBWT.
- Ancestral Weapon: Subverted.
- Beef Gate: Sort of. In October, the game servers turn all worlds Pure Black for all players. - High Collar of Doom
- Jerkass
- Katanas Are Just Better
- You Have Outlived Your Usefulness: He decides to "test" the Makoto on you if you give it to him.
Valley of Defilement Residents[]

An old crone who is a native resident of the Valley. She salvages and sells the weapons and armor of the priests and temple knights who have fallen within the Valley, both from Astraea's entourage and from clergy warriors who journeyed to confirm the rumors of Astraea becoming a Demon.
- Blatant Lies: Perhaps. She constantly claims to have a sick child, in the hopes that the player character will feel sympathy and buy more of her wares. However, given that this child is nowhere to be seen, it seems likely that it's a sob story she's just making up.
- Green-Eyed Monster: Claims to have been the most desirable woman in the Valley until Astraea came. Now, she spends her time bad-mouthing the Demon Maiden, claiming that the Valley was better before Astraea arrived, and hoping that whatever slayer appears will kill her.
- I Was Quite a Looker
- Jerkass
Selen Vinland[]
A church warrior in search of her brother Garl, to tell him of their father's passing. She appears after the death of the Dirty Colossus and when the player achieves a Pure White World Tendency. Otherwise, she'll appear as a Black Phantom during a Pure Black World Tendency.
- Bling of War: Her set of Dull Gold Armor. Like her brother's Dark Silver Armor, it is enchanted against magic, bleeding, and poisons.
Boletarian Palace Bosses[]
Phalanx[]
The corrupted form of the tribeswoman Long Bow Oolan, one of the Knights of the Round Table of Boletaria. She was a great archer, although the only reason she chose to become one was to ensure that she never had to put her life in danger in the front-lines. The legionaries that protected her in life have now become Hoplites: spineless blobs wielding a large shield and spears. Oolan herself has now become the helpless, spineless core blob "Phalanx". She is protected by her Hoplites like she was in life.
- And I Must Scream
- Blade on a Stick: Throws an enormous one out of the front gate after you open it. Her Hoplites are also armed with them.
- Blob Monster
- Bow and Sword In Accord: Subverted with the actual boss battle, but fights this way when you encounter the Black Phantom form of her human self in 1-4.
- Dirty Coward: As a human and as a Demon. The weapon made with her Demon's soul is also a coward's weapon: a spear designed to destroy an enemy's equipment rather than fighting with skill.
- A Fate Worse Than Death
- Flunky Boss
- Kill It with Fire: Its primary weakness.
- Luckily My Shield-Baring Hoplites Will Protect Me: Any Hoplites that are nearby will cling to her body and form a protective shell of shields and spears.
- Zero Effort Boss: Even if you wipe out all of her Hoplites before going after her, she will never attack.
Tower Knight[]
The corrupted form of the Knight of the Tower, Alfred, a Knight of the Round Table of Boletaria. He was renown for his unique Tower Shield, forged to stop almost any physical or magical attack. Once he became a Demon, he grew to a great height and wields a larger form of his shield.
- Achilles Heel: Literally! He'll fall over and be defenseless should you hit both of his heels enough.
- Attack of the 50 Foot Whatever
- Blade on a Stick
- A Fate Worse Than Death
- Luckily, My Shield Will Protect Me: Played straight if you decide to attack from the upper levels of the arena.
- Shield-Bash: If you attack up close, he might slam his shield on the ground as an attack.
- Tin Tyrant
Penetrator[]
The corrupt form of the Knight of the Lance, Metas, a Knight of the Round Table of Boletaria. As a human, he wielded a straight-sword longer than most spears. As a Demon, he still wields his unique sword, albeit a version bolstered by Demon's souls.
- Bait and Switch Boss: That Fat Official you've been trailing? Yeah, you won't be seeing much of him.
- BFS
- Establishing Character Moment: How does he enter? By impaling the Fat Official you've been chasing for the entire level and tossing him aside like a ragdoll.
- A Fate Worse Than Death
- Impaled with Extreme Prejudice: Inverted.
- Names to Run Away From Really Fast
- Sword Lines
- Tin Tyrant: Not to the same extent as the Tower Knight, but very much a qualifier.
False King Allant[]
Voiced by: Peter Marinker |
A Demonic doppelganger created by the real Allant to rule Boletaria in his stead and spread the Colorless Fog. The False King wields a specter version of the Soulbrandt, and his Demon Soul is used to reforge the Demonbrandt and Soulbrandt into the Northern Regalia.
- Actually a Doombot: The name above his life meter reads "Old King Allant", but defeating him or keeping Ostrava alive through the previous three segments reveals that he's a demonic duplicate of the real Allant.
- Badass Beard
- Badass Longcoat
- Badass Long Hair
- Boss Remix: His battle theme is a less-hectic, pipe organ version of the intro theme.
- Guttural Growler
- Having a Blast: When he sticks his sword into the ground, he starts charging up a huge explosion. You can either get as far away from him as you can, or try to hit him as hard as you can to make him stop.
- Level Drain: Soulsucker.
- Light Is Not Good: He wears white clothing and a pair of energy trails coming from his shoulders can resemble ethereal angel wings.
- Lightning Bruiser
- Magic Knight
- Man in White
- Neck Lift: Does this to you if you happen to get by his Soulsucker spell.
- Razor Wind: One of his most common attacks.
- Stab the Sky: This indicates that he's about to do a series of dash attacks.
- Videogame Dashing: His primary method of horizontal movement. Always followed by a slash or Razor Wind.
Stonefang Tunnel Bosses[]
Armor Spider[]
A mysterious Demon spider that casts fire magic and is strong against it, but is weak towards other kinds of magic. It is the possible source of Spiderstone found within the Tunnels.
- All Webbed Up: Can fire web shots that will slow you down if they hit.
- Breath Weapon: Has a variety of fireballs at its disposal.
- Giant Spider
Flamelurker[]
A Demon trapped within the Tunnels, along with the Dragon God. Its origins are shrouded in mystery. One fan theory is that it is the Demon-corrupted soul of the Legendary Big M, a strongman who could slay dragons with his bare fists. A second theory is that it is the corrupted form of the last King of the Burrowers, as the Flamelurker's head resembles the shape of the Burrower King's head and circlet depicted on the Stonefang Archstone. Its soul can be given to Blacksmith Ed, allowing him to forge more powerful weapons.
- Lightning Bruiser
- Megaton Punch: Often, and often combined with Having a Blast.
- Playing with Fire
- Turns Red: Damage it enough, and the flames surrounding it become more intense and its attacks become more aggressive.
- Wake Up Call Boss: If you've been playing the game in order (1-1, 1-2, 2-1). He isn't stationary like Armored Spider, and is much faster than Phalanx and Tower Knight, while hitting harder than those 3 bosses, so you must use other methods besides a shield to survive his attacks.
Dragon God[]
An ancient dragon whose bones were contained and worshiped within the deepest depths of the Stonefang Tunnels. The Burrowers feared that their God would resurrect, and built a special temple around its skeleton with enchanted ballistae stationed so that they could fell it. Their fears were well founded, as when the Colorless Fog reached the chamber, it tapped into the innate power within the bones and resurrected the Dragon God as a malicious Demon. Its skeleton was used as the source of Dragonstone.
- Breath Weapon
- Final Boss Preview: If you kill the Vanguard at the end of the tutorial, he will be waiting for you at the bottom of a flight of stairs, more than willing to send you to the Nexus.
- Impaled with Extreme Prejudice: This is the only way you can win his boss fight.
- Megaton Punch: Puts you on the receiving end of one, should you beat the Vanguard.
- One-Hit Kill: Don't let it see you. Just don't.
- Physical God: To the Burrowers.
- Puzzle Boss: By comparison to every other boss in the game. You can't even get close enough to attack it without pinning it down first, and you have to switch between clearing out debris and hiding behind pillars so he doesn't annihilate you.
- More Teeth Than the Osmond Family: Has two sets of teeth.
- Red Eyes, Take Warning: This, and a really loud roar, is how you know it's about to attack.
- Stationary Boss
Tower of Latria Bosses[]
Fool's Idol[]
A Demon marionette created by the Old Monk with the soul of his wife to trick the prisoners into believing the Queen was still alive. There is a mage dregling prisoner overlooking the chapel, claiming to be of no trouble. He's lying. He was bound there to resurrect the Fool's Idol should anyone fell it in combat. The Idol will only be completely defeated should the dregling be killed.
- Cute Monster Girl
- Death Is Not Permanent: At least not until you kill the prisoner that endlessly resurrects her.
- Doppleganger Attack: Will summon clones of itself every time it exits a teleport.
- Evil Laugh
- Flunky Boss: In addition to her clones, there are several prisoners in her boss room.
- Frickin' Laser Beams
- Multi-Armed and Dangerous
- Teleporters and Transporters
- Trap Master: She's a fan of trap runes that cause momentary paralysis.
Maneater[]
A gargoyle-like chimera Demon created by the Old Monk. It has a man's face, a muscular body, wings, and the tail of a serpent. Partway through the battle, a second one appears.
- Dual Boss
- Frickin' Laser Beams: If the snake tail is intact, it can fire three green soul arrows that will home in towards a target.
- Make Me Wanna Shout: It's sonic wave attack.
- Megaton Punch: Serves as its most basic attack.
- Mix-and-Match Demons: Like most everything else in the Tower of Latria, the Maneater is one of the Old Monk's artificial Demons.
- Status Buff: Power Boost, the upper body of the Demon will glow yellow, signaling a significant increase in damage. It can only use this if its snake tail is still attached.
Old Monk[]
The husband of the late Queen, he was exiled for unknown reasons. During his exile, he came across a Golden Robe, which imbued him with Demonic power. He eventually returned to Latria, and using his newfound power, overthrew his wife and her family. He transformed the Tower into a combination prison and Demon factory. Upon reaching the throne room, it is revealed that the Old Monk has withered to a corpse, and the Golden Robe is the actual Demon.
- Bait and Switch Boss: Rather than fighting the Old Monk himself, you fight a Black Phantom he summons with his last breath.
- Body Horror
- Demonic Possession: Implied by the Golden Robe.
- Frickin' Laser Beams: Comes with an endless supply of Homing Soul Arrows.
- Grand Theft Me: Try to Summon or get invaded? He intervenes and sends them to the top of the tower to control them.
- Mirror Boss: Due to being a Black Phantom. Sometimes said Black Phantom is another player.
- Nice Head Wrap
- Turns Red: The more damage he takes, the more Homing Soul Arrows he fires at a time.
- Wolverine Claws: The weapon of choice for the AI Black Phantom. Can be subverted if the opponent is human.
Shrine of Storms Bosses[]
Adjudicator[]
The first stage in the ritual that the Shadowmen performed to appease the Storm King required the dead to be judged by the Adjudicator. It is a large, blubbery creature with a reptilian tongue. It wields a pair of giant cleavers, the left one of which is broken. Atop its head sits a crown with a golden crow on it. Similar to the Golden Robe being the true Demon rather than the Old Monk, the golden crow is the true Demon rather than the creature it sits upon. The crow would judge the fallen, and ordered its host to eat the corpses of the cowardly and the corpses of those who ate birds in their diet.
- Body Horror
- Dual-Wielding: Subverted. The Adjudicator has a Cleaver in each hand, but one is broken. You can see the broken half impaled in its stomach.
- Fat Bastard
- Overly Long Tongue
- Pivotal Boss: It's a large opponent in a small room. There won't be much moving for it to do.
- Weaksauce Weakness: Much like the Vanguard, its attacks can be avoided by circling it clockwise while staying close to it. Since it doesn't have the shockwave that the Vanguard does, it's less of a threat.
Old Hero[]
The second stage in the ritual that the Shadowmen performed to appease the Storm King was that the dead who passed judgement be laid upon an altar during a storm and be purified. The Old Hero, also known as the Searcher of Storms, was potentially the only one to not go through with the ritual after having fallen out of favor with his clansmen. His body is found chained to a wall overlooking the shrine, forced to "watch" as more worthy warriors were honored. After the Colorless Fog spread to the Shrine, it touched the spark within the Old Hero's decayed body, allowing him to emerge from it in a soul form. During life, he was a blind warrior who, with the help of his crystal sword, spent his life surviving by luck and an acute awareness of his surroundings. His Demon form also has these limitations.
- BFS/Sinister Scimitar: An enormous curved sword made of crystal.
- Do Not Taunt Cthulhu: While the safest strategy is attacking from a distance, shooting him with arrows in rapid succession will alert him to your position, making him charge right at you.
- The Fool: Despite the sword's crappier damage output compared to the weapon used to forge it, ore farmers will make and use it due to the fact that it doubles your Random Drops.
- Handicapped Badass
- Unskilled but Strong: His basic attack pattern is "walk a few steps, then take a swing at the first sound you hear", and BOY does it pack a punch if it hits.
Storm King[]
The last stage in the ritual that the Shadowmen performed to appease the Storm King was that the purified body be set upon a final altar for the Storm King to consume. The Storm King is a rather massive version of the regular Storm Beasts encountered. It leaves part of the fighting to its minions, and will only step in after each wave of minions is killed. Its only weakness is the Stormruler blade found along the beach among the grave markers. While only in this specific area, the Stormruler will emit a wave of energy said to be able to rend storms as a means to combat the Storm King and its minions.
- Eldritch Abomination
- Flunky Boss: You have to kill quite a few Storm Beasts before the Storm King itself appears.
- Giant Flyer
- Macross Missile Massacre
- Physical God: The Storm King is the pagan god of the Shadowmen, given a physical form by the Fog of Doom.
Valley of Defilement Bosses[]
Leechmonger[]
The corrupted form of the fallen Risaia of Istarel, one of the wards of Maiden Astraea. After she met her death at the hands of three Giant Deprived Ones, Risaia's body fell into a mass of leeches, which feasted upon it. The Fog touched the soul-enhanced leeches, creating the Leechmonger.
- Healing Factor: Will rebuild itself with more leeches and recover HP in the process.
- Stationary Boss
- The Worm That Walks
Dirty Colossus[]
A mysterious golem made from the corruption inhabiting the Valley. Faceless, asymmetrical in build, covered in "armor" made of broken shells and wood. Its right "hand" is an infected growth and its left is a void which fires out flies. Some speculate that it was made from the corpse of Vito the Moonlight Knight, one of Astraea's wards.
- Bee-Bee Gun: Sorta. Its primary method of attack is shooting swarms of flies from one of its fists.
- Kill It with Fire: Its primary weakness.
- Spikes of Villainy
Maiden Astraea and Garl Vinland[]
Voiced by: Clare Corbett (Saint Astraea); Josh Cohen (Garl Vinland) |
The Sixth Saint of the Church, Astraea set out on a pilgrimage to find the Valley of Defilement. Upon reaching the Valley, Astraea took pity upon the abandoned masses. Her and her closest bodyguard, Garl Vinland, set off to help bring comfort to those awaiting their death. When the Fog arrived, Astraea's faith shattered. She wholly accepted the Fog, becoming a Demon martyr. Despite the rest of the clergy and the Church turning against her, Garl stood by her side the entire time.
Once the player starts Selen's side quest, Garl is encountered as a Black Phantom.
- Anti-Villain: Both are a TypeIV.
- Atop a Mountain of Corpses: Maiden Astraea spends the entire fight sitting at the foot of a pile of bodies.
- Bling of War: Garl wears a full-body set of Dark Silver Armor and wields a Dark Silver Shield and the Bramd war mace. His reasons are justified, as all his equipment is enchanted to resist magic, bleeding, poisons, and the plague.
- Boss Banter: Subverted, since the protagonist doesn't talk, but both Maiden Astraea and Garl Vinland have plenty to say.
- Dark Is Not Evil
- Driven to Suicide: Should you defeat Garl first, Astraea will commit suicide. Should you defeat Astraea first, you can either kill Garl as well, or start to leave the area. Garl will then commit suicide out of grief.
- Drop the Hammer: Garl's weapon of choice, the Bramd.
- Healing Factor: Maiden Astraea will gradually heal herself as she takes damage, which can be particularly bothersome if you decide to use a bow to attack her. Garl prefers the use of healing miracles rather than a gradual approach.
- I Will Protect Maiden Astraea
- Lady and Knight
- Luckily, My Shield Will Protect Me: Garl Vinland's Dark Silver Shield, which has high Magic Defense.
- Playing the Heart Strings: Their boss theme, which makes you feel even worse for killing them.
- Soft Spoken Sadist: Garl's voice is rather calm and low in tone. While the sadist part is mostly subverted, he does has his share of morbid one-liners...
Garl Vinland: "Plunge to your death... And let the acid melt the flesh from your bones!" |
Garl Vinland: "We live humble lives. Leave us be!" |
Optional Bosses[]
Old King Doran[]
Voiced by: Chris Fairbanks |
The founder of Boletaria, Doran is also known as the Last Hero and the Everlasting One. After his death, he became a demigod and was charged to protect both the royal family and their greatest treasure: the Northern Regalia. When King Allant sought out the Old One, he went to the mausoleum and split the weapon into its two halves: Demonbrandt and Soulbrandt. Allant took the Soulbrandt for his own, leaving the Demonbrandt behind. Doran wields a spectral replica of the Northern Regalia and still wears his Ancient King's armor, although the bronze armor has long since turned green from oxidization.
- The Adjective One: Everlasting One, in this case.
- Cool Helmet
- The Faceless
- Power Echoes
- Ye Olde Butcherede Englishe
Red and Blue Dragons[]
The "pets" of the False Allant that he brought with him to Boletaria. They make their roost among the mountains beside the Cliff Pathway, using the Palace as their feeding grounds. Their only appearance is in the Boletarian Palace world, and they disappear until the next playthrough once the False Allant is killed.
- Breath Weapon: Three guesses.
- The Dragon: Both literal and played straight with the Blue Dragon, as he's your last major obstacle before the False King Allant.
- Red Oni, Blue Oni: The red dragon stands at its nest in an attack position, searching for prey to torch. The blue dragon, meanwhile, is taking a nap and won't bother you, although its tail is twitching and will slam into the ground if you approach it. While the red dragon will hound you for the first half of the Boletarian Palace, the blue dragon will only attack once you reach the King's Tower.
Vanguard[]
A large Demon with a rather Cthulhu-like appearance, a horned head, and three eyes. It wields a massive battle axe. A weaker version is faced as the boss of the Tutorial area, while the stronger version is faced in the Shrine of Storms.
- An Axe to Grind
- Ground Pound
- Hopeless Boss Fight: That you can win, if you are good enough.
- Fat Bastard
- Stationary Boss: The one at the Shrine of Storms never leaves his spot.
- Warmup Boss
- Weaksauce Weakness: All of its attacks (save the ground-pound shockwave) can be avoided by circling it clockwise while staying close to it.
Primeval Demon[]
Gigantic maggot-like newborn Demons, they only appear in worlds where you have a near-Black or Pure Black World Tendency. Only five can be encountered in each playthrough of the game. Their Colorless Demon's Souls are described as "powerless" and are used to upgrade certain legendary weapons.
- Zero Effort Boss: A welcome thing in Boletaria, given what everything else does.
Below the Nexus[]
Fallen King Allant[]
Voiced by: Peter Marinker |
The deteriorated form of King Allant, a result of the deaths of the Old One's Archdemons. His depression lead to the reawakening of the Old One, Allant playing off his personal suffering as belonging to the world. In the end, he wishes the world destroyed as an escape from his suffering. Even in his horrific state, he clings to the Soulbrandt.
The Old One[]
An ancient being, almost as old as the Maiden in Black, which appears as an enormous tree. Its origins are unknown, its will is unknown. The Old One is the source of all Soul Arts.
- The Adjective One
- Big Bad
- Eldritch Abomination
- God Is Evil: God and the Old One are one and the same.
- World Tree
- Your Soul Is Mine: Its modus operandi is to devour mortal souls.
