- A highly puzzling case in Downfall. The main villain is advocating genocide of the Gotei, instigate a bloody war that claims many lives including named characters and fan favorites. Yet the changes instigated among the Arrancar the policy is 'don't eat wholes - or each other'. Furthermore, their opponents are shown executing enemy wounded at the conclusion of chapter 20.
- And who is this Big Bad, by the way? Why... Unohana of course!
- Played with in a Knights of the Old Republic Fan Fiction in which The Mind Wipe doesn't take effect for more than two days. Revan in disgust says that he has never raped, or condoned rape. Then he thinks, is violating a person's mind, soul, and spirit really any different? However due to that thought he follows the official end and converts back to the light side, of course while still being as close to being a Anti-Hero as he can while being light.
- In Tiberium Wars, the Brotherhood of Nod draws the line at rape, and authorizes summary execution for any soldier caught in the process.
- To emphasize this point, at one point a Nod soldier attempts to rape GDI Intelligence officer Sandra Telfair, who has been briefly captured. Before he can start, though, Brother-Captain Allen of the Black Hand smashes down the door, and beats the would-be-rapist's face against a wall before chucking him out a window. The Brotherhood takes this kind of thing seriously.
- They go so far as to declare it a sin against Kane.
- The new Chaos gods from The Open Door have laws, if they can be even called that, so anarchic they would horrify many a self-proclaimed anarchist and their attitude towards combat approaches The Unfettered levels, with brainwashing of POWs being seen as a valid tactic. However, they will not tolerate human trafficking or abuse of children, amongst others. Considering who they used to be, it makes sense. In fact, child murderers get to visit the Hall of Torments after their demise.
- Also deconstructed; this partiality towards children doesn't stop them in the least from doing horrible, horrible things to anyone who isn't one - or, for that matter, from indoctrinating said children to believe anything they do is just and right. This can come off as quite warped to other races they encounter.
- The website StarDestroyer.net, concerning the question of whether The Empire from Star Wars would beat The Federation from Star Trek in a war, is written in the character of an Imperial officer. When confronted with Federation transporter technology, he notes that "Although some might claim that life continues if a precise duplicate is created from the original, many feel that the discontinuity of consciousness represents death. This may be regarded as a mere philosophical issue, but our officers and scientists are unanimous in their condemnation of this process as an unconscionable concept", referring to philosophical and moral issues surrounding the technology.
- Of course, one could conclude that this is actually Sour Grapes, not Even Evil Has Standards, especially since the writer will and has espoused that exact viewpoint several times on the site. Incidentally, Star Trek has established that beings are still conscious and aware throughout transport.
- I think that the point is more that, though transporters are perfectly fine for teleporting a body all over the place, they don't have any mechanism for the soul… that is, if you believe in the soul, and Rule of Cautious Editing Judgementlet's not get into that here]].
- It makes perfect sense: The Federation is a generally atheistic society, while in the Empire you have the very spiritual Jedi and Sith, scientific knowledge of the Force and the proven existence of Force Ghosts.
- Pokemon fanfic Dragon Master has Giovanni of Team Rocket delivering the line to power-mad Claire and refusing to continue their alliance.
- In another scene, Laine confronts Ember about the circumstances of her father's death, and he reassures her with a similar statement.
- The trope is deconstructed, as well; it's suggested that by keeping evil to standards, Giovanni makes it easier for law enforcement to keep tabs on him and Team Rocket.
- In Cullin' of the Fold, a Redwall fic that's a Mary Sue and Twilight parody, the female protagonist is captured by a quintet of vermin. When two of them begin to poke and prod her, she jumps to the conclusion that they intend to rape her and says so, adding that she won't fight back if they'll just let her go afterwards, leading to this exchange:
Petula: Look ... I have a pretty good idea what you're going to do. I won't fight, if you want. I don't want to make trouble. Just get it over with and let me go. |
- Gorillaz fanfic First Impressions quotes Murdoc as saying "I don't do little kids or coma patients, and for the record that thing with the cat was taken entirely out of context!" The "little kids" bit is presumably true. He almost "did a coma patient", but changed his mind.
- Batman fanfic Swing It Low has Harley Quinn overhearing a conversation between two men that implied the murder of a prostitute. Despite the many terrible things that Harley had been party to, she had never killed a working girl, and found such a crime to be reprehensible. As she thought to herself, they dealt with enough trouble as it was and worked really hard just to eke out a living.
- The batarian ambassador and assistant to the Manaban Emperor in the Mass Effect fanfic The Council Era (who acknowledges his and his associate's own moral ambiguity) views Tyrin Lieph's attempt at suppressing the manaba through cultural/religious genocide as going too far. The Emperor tortures one of Tyrin's allies to find his location.
- This results in both the Emperor and the ambassador being victims of Hoist by His Own Petard when Tyrin remotely detonates an electric surge on his ally's body, killing them both.
- The Scarecrow's comments in A Dark Knight Over Sin City, indicate that he cares very little about the rest of the Batman Rogues Gallery and found The Yellow Bastard "distasteful". Then again, the guy was working with him.
- In the Christian Humber Reloaded webcomic, the main character (a Sociopathic Hero who has no qualms about mass murder and will kill entire families in revenge) happens upon the webcomic author talking on his cell phone about how he's going to make a webcomic mocking the fic. His response? "You sound like an ASSHOLE!"
- A Hero, a crossover between Doctor Who and Puella Magi Madoka Magica, features Dalek Sec talking morals with Kyubey and giving him a verbal smackdown for manipulating the course of human civilization and stripping them of their right to self-determination.
Sec: YO-UR ME-THODS ARE RE-PUL-SIVE. YOU EXPLOIT THESE HUMANS, YOU WITH-HOLD VI-TAL IN-FOR-MA-TION- |
- In Charles Gray's Kim Possible fanfic "Buried", someone kidnaps Kim Possible and buries her alive to impress Drakken and hopefully get a job in his organization. Drakken arranges to have the wanna-be henchman killed because he was revolted by what he had done to Kim. In the sequel, "The Chrysanthemum and the Sword" Kim's other villains (except for Monkey Fist) react similarly to her plight (Motor Ed even sends her a get-well card), while Shego works with Barkin and Ron to thwart Monkey Fist's plan to steal some nukes.
- In Ultimate Spider-Woman: Change With The Light, the supervillain Blizzard turns out to be much more of a petty thug than a sadist or murderer, unlike most of Spider-Woman's enemies. Although Spider-Woman defeats him when he tries to rob an armored car, he doesn't hold a grudge against her and later helps her protect many of New York's civilians when the city is invaded by an army of Brainwashed and Crazy supervillains. He also disdains the rest of Spider-Woman's Rogues Gallery for their sadism and cruelty, providing helpful advice to Tarot when he finds that she doesn't care about revenge on Spider-Woman either and isn't a Complete Monster either.
- Although NYPD Detective Jason Phillip Macendale is a very Dirty Cop, freely accepting bribes from the Kingpin's syndicate, when Kitty Pryde is threatened by anti-mutant racists, he does his job as a police officer and investigates the crime wholeheartedly. Detective Macendale is royally pissed off by the way that the anti-mutant activists justify their actions with motherhood-and-apple-pie statements like saying that they're protecting the community or their families, since in his mind they're no better than him and at least he admits that he's a corrupt son of a bitch.
- Within the warped and inconsistent moral code outlined in Naruto Veangance Revelaitons, Naruto's reluctance to have sex with Sakura out of a desire to not hurt her boyfriend Ronan can be seen as this, even if he ultimately gives in.
- Ronan, who is disgusted by men having sex with each other is outraged to learn that one of the Council's plans is to kill all gay people, declaring that in spite of not liking gay men, he would never kill them. This is meant to be proof that he's tolerant, but to most readers, it comes off as this trope.
- In When There Was a Tomorrow: Jack, a homicidal girl with a Hair-Trigger Temper and utter contempt for almost everyone, is nauseated by a video on Brute eating habits.
- The version of My Little Pony Friendship Is Magic's Prince Blueblood on the "Askblueblood" Tumblog is even more of a Jerkass than the show version, to the point of possibly qualifying as a Politically-Incorrect Villain. He's hugely misogynistic. He has claimed that Princess Luna's special talent is being fat and eating and that her cutie mark represents the moon after she was done with it, as well as trying to get her kidnapped by pirates. (though Luna has tried beating him with a baseball bat, making this more a case of their family dynamic being Royally Screwed-Up) He rarely passes up a chance to insult or abuse Rarity. He thinks kids who go to school are nerds. However, when someone suggested that he rape and murder Sweetie BelleYes, someone actually suggested this, his response was a blank stare, followed by an image of the "Delete your account" page with the password filled in and the cursor over the Yes button.
- In a crossover fanfic, Ace Combat: The Equestrian War, as told by Edge, not every griffon wants to murder the ponies and they're most likely unaware of Red Cyclone's Evil Plan.
- In the Death Note fanfic Low Light, Light/Kira is horrified when he learns that L blew up an orphanage in order to protect him. "THEY WERE A THREAT!"
- In Gavalanche's fancomic Prince Blueblood was absolutely horrified to learn that Rarity tried to drown her 'sister', Sweetie Belle just so she could be with him.
- Yuuka Kazami, in the Touhou fanfiction Imperfect Metamorphosis, has a surprisingly rigid set of standards for a Complete Monster and Eldritch Abomination; the problem is that they make no sense to anyone except her. She views courtesy and decorum as of the utmost importance (to the point that she killed the previous owners of her Inn room because they decided to scream in terror instead of greeting her politely), anyone killing plants puts her swiftly into This Is Unforgivable! territory, and while she is glad to protect children from harm she apparently doesn't consider raping them to be harmful.
- In All You Need Is Love Takeshi the heroin dealer gives Light a few free pointers on how to avoid getting drugged and raped by L.
Takeshi (to Light): Have you been watching what you drink, he's probably spiked everything you touch. |
- Getting Back on Your Hooves: The Diamond Dogs are perfectly willing to help Checker Monarch ruin the life of a mare they don't even know as long as they're paid. However, even they're horrified when Checker Mind Rapes Rainbow Dash with nightmares in order to turn her on Trixie. They still work for her after this, but now they're actively terrified of her.
- In A Cure for Love Light is enraged that Astraea would kill in his name when innocents are getting caught in the crossfire. And V, an unrepentant Professional Killer shakes in terror after Light uses the death of his father to advance his plans and shows no remorse afterwards.
- Metroid: Kamen Rider Generations Vol. 3: Fates Intertwined has many examples:
- One reason why Shingetsu really despises Faust is 1) that he's utterly disgusted of turning humans into mindless beasts for the benefit of science. 2) He really hates the idea of turning Kamen Riders as tools of war. Depending on the Writer, Shingetsu has no problem zig-zagging this trope especially when he starts causing a lot of mayhem in Touto.
- He also loathes the Prime Ministers of Hokuto (Yoshiko Tajimi) and Seito (Masakuni Mido) over their obsession with the power of Pandora Box, indicating that he is a firm believer of Evil Is Not a Toy.
- In chapter 129, he is also repulsed by Kaguya's true colors, the fact the reason she got involved in the war is to get her hands on Pandora Box under the pretense of a pacifistic anti-war activist leader. In short, she was using Sento to get her hands on the said Artifact of Doom so she could create a new world in her own likeness. After Shingetsu witnessed this deception, the only thing he says is: "I've never seen such a human being this pure evil."
- Gentoku Himuro/Night Rogue has his moments, especially when confronting the aforementioned Shingetsu whenever the latter goes way overboard with his "survival of the fittest" filibusters. While Night Rogue might be a cold-blooded villain, Gentoku is visibly repulsed at every acts of spite Shingetsu has done, he's even horrified at Shingetsu's apparent murder of Intrepid Reporter Sawa. He is also quick to condemn Kaguya not only for her god complex, but treating her child as well as the brainwashed Misora, like a sex toy.
- Even after revealed to be Good All Along, Anzu Izumi/Rakurai has her own boundaries that she would not cross: the only person she wouldn't use as an expendable pawn for her Revenge by Proxy schemes is her brother, Goro. Also, she's visibly horrified at Shingetsu's murder of Gentoku Himuro. She is even repulsed when Shingetsu decides to continue Gentoku's plans in militarizing the Rider System by forming a partnership with Jusaburo Nanba and at the same time planning to betray Blood Stalk to achieve that goal.
- She herself is horrified when Kusanagi/Kerberos Smash brutally murders Gentoku Himuro; had she not got over her desire to get revenge on Faust, she might have ended up like Kusanagi: a broken and mentally-ill man.
- Juzaburou Nanba of all people in chapter 127. Sure, he has abducted orphans and indoctrinated them into becoming scientists, soldiers, and spies, starting a war between three warring Japanese nations, and on top of that, aspires to unify Japan into a global superpower. He draws the line at Kaguya, who used to be a brilliant and most recognized scientist in his corporation, becomes focused in furthering her own ambition. If that wasn't enough, having her daughter injected with Nebula Gas in an act of spite towards her rival, Takumi Katsuragi. Juzaburou was also quick to condemn Kaguya for that act and kicked her out of Nanba Heavy Industries, which ultimately lead her to founding Elpis Corporation.
- Ditto for Soichi Isurugi/Blood Stalk, the reason why he told Sento not to trust Kaguya: she pretended to be a paragon of peace (ironically, Kaguya is not a pacifist to begin with), so she could get her hands on Pandora's Box. He also doesn't too kindly to anyone comparing him to Kaguya because of how he treated Misora, Goro found that out the hard way. Evolto also feels the same thing, despite his only goal but to destroy the Earth with Pandora's Box, He is also unnerved with the sexual abuse Kaguya inflicts on Misora.
- Heck, even the four Pandora Demon Beasts, demonic alien creatures who are imprisoned inside Pandora's Box really want to get their hands on the person who sealed them in the first place. They don't take too kindly with Kaguya bossing them around.
- Foundation X (yes, that Foundation X[1]) appear to draw the line on Domestic Abuse and sexual assault. They break their sponsorship with Kaguya in chapter 150 after she was publicly exposed as a child abuser and molester by a mystery speaker, who in reality, is Goro in disguise.
- Engine Sentai Go-Onger: 10 YEARS PRELUDE feat. Kamen Rider Build:
- Evil Genius Hiramechimdes, being loyal to his superior, Yogostein reveals that he has a strong dislike for the latter's father, Yogoshimacritein, finding him revoltingly evil, the fact that he along with the three Pollution Ministers were nothing more but his expendable pawns.
- Even his fellow Gaiark Pollution Ministers voice their disdain for this story's Big Bad. Hiramechimedes even describes Kai as the most evil human being ever encountered.
- While not evil but more of a Serial Killer Killer overlapping with Hitman with a Heart, Shinya Aizawa is a ruthless assassin working with the good guys who executes shoot-to-kill missions to eliminate those who evade justice - ranging from sexual offenders, Domestic Abusers, and even corrupt pollice officers of all things. He flat-out refuses to kill his targets indiscriminately just for the sake of murder.
- He is not a fan of abusive and negligent parents. If he sees a parent mistreating their children, he'll put a bullet into their heads without second thought.
- Kai Amataro, the aforementioned Foundation X benefactor who used to have ties with Kaguya, also draws the line on genocide. He reveals that the Foundation had renounced their ties with Kaisei Mogami, more particularly from the Kamen Riders' main universe. The Foundation themselves labeled Mogami a traitor and all records of him in the organization were erased due to his association with the other Mogami in Build's universe and their role during the events of Heisei Generations: FINAL. Subverted, once he's revealed to be just as worse than Kaguya.
- Shinobu Katsuragi, Sento's dad, while his motives in the story are a mystery to everyone (even to his own son of all people) all the while being the de facto head of Neo Faust, is less trustworthy towards Foundation X. He's certain that Foundation X will come after the Lostbottles and use it in their own illegal activities. He is even vexed at the mere mention of Kaguya Kozuki, who became his son's future Arch Enemy. Shinobu even pointed out that Kaguya is a disgrace to other scientists like himself for experimenting on her own daughter with Nebula Gas, along with her petty jealousy towards his son.
- Medusa, yes that Medusa. After she is resurrected by Foundation X through artificial means, instead of being summoned into the battlefield to deal with the Kamen Riders and Go-Ongers, she had no hesitation of stabbing them on the back. Medusa does not like to be used by anyone as a means to an end. Let's also not forget her last moments when she finds out that Wiseman, aka, Sou Fueki, is actually the White Wizard.
- Taki Gaiden: The Kunoichi Who Leapt Through Time:
- The Time Jackers have a goal to replace Oma Zi-O with their own king, by conceiving Another Riders, monstrous caricatures of past Kamen Riders to overwrite the existence of those said Riders. However, they apparently draw the line on the following:
- Another Ryuki's rampage in that timeline goes horribly wrong when Takeshi Asakura gets involved; something that the Time Jackers were wary of. In other words, both Uhr and Ora agree that Asakura is too dangerous to exist that needed to be erased, Ora then asks Sougo, Geiz, and Taki to kill him in the past.
- Both of the three have no interest on Soul Edge and the mere mention of the Azure Knight can also make even Sworz unnerved.
- Even Sworz himself has his moments, in addition to his gang's aforementioned disinterest with the cursed sword; he doesn't like anyone other than his fellow Time Jackers doing their job in creation of Another Riders. That's when he found out that his former superior-turned traitor, Ray was the one behind Another Blade's creation.
- The Time Jackers have a goal to replace Oma Zi-O with their own king, by conceiving Another Riders, monstrous caricatures of past Kamen Riders to overwrite the existence of those said Riders. However, they apparently draw the line on the following:
- Midnight Kittens (a.k.a Various! Miraculous Ladybug Series x Genderbend Adrien Agreste! Oc Insert):
- If Hawk Moth hears one utter of an akumatized villain having intentions to harm Amelie (Genderbend Adrien), it's automatically Villain Override. Of course, since he also did this to the Evillustrator, who genuinely had pure intentions with her, this might be deconstructed later.
- Marin/Scarlet Beetle (Genderbend Marinette/Ladybug) isn't a villain as now, but he is still a huge Bitch in Sheep's Clothing. Still, there are lines he won't cross.
- He's mostly gotten used to Kitty Noir's (Genderbend Chat Noir) many admirers, but he does have his moments of genuinely feeling sorry for her. Notable moments include: Copycat and Darkblade. In the former, he is outraged to see Copycat straddling her about to take off her ring and fights him off. In the latter, he asks who Charlotte is and Kitty emotionlessly answers that's Darkblade's lost love and who he thinks she is, he is genuinely worried for her.
- This is probably subject to change but he (like canon Ladybug) doesn't like Kitty getting seriously hurt.
- He genuinely does seem to care for his parents, Arlo and Tikki. Though this is also subject to change, especially with Tikki.
- In 'Gamer' despite being the reason Max was akumatized, he is also shocked when Max doesn't want to be in the tournament anymore.
- Whereas Lady Wifi let Ladybug help Chat because she thought if she let Ladybug use her Lucky Charm, it would make it easier to learn her identity. Lord Wifi does it because of this and because he wants Kitty alive. Course she's not thankful since he still left her in a freezer to potentially freeze to death.
